Inspiration
By Dale Berry, CP Results Coach™

"What you choose to believe will drive your emotions, behavior, and thus the results of your life."
Art Berg, 1962-2002

Inspiration is a very unique and wonderful experience. Inspiration can arrive in your life at moment's notice, and is some instances it can leave just as quickly. What is it about being inspired that drives us to push just a little more?

Last fall I was in my front yard raking leaves when I noticed a young girl about 12 years old running down the sidewalk with her father beside her on a bicycle. It was obvious this young athlete was in training for an upcoming race, her father was cheering her on and encouraging her to keep up the pace to reach the end of the block. Despite the encouragement from her father however, she was tiring quickly and slowing down with every step.

Although I did not know either the father or the daughter, as they crossed in front of my house I started to loudly cheer and clap and shout encouragement. Just as I expected, the young lady suddenly discovered she did have some extra energy, she became inspired she picked up her pace and all but sprinted the last 100 yards to the end of the block and around the corner with her father following behind trying to keep up.

That short fleeting relationship I had with the young lady running in front of my home is very much like the relationship I had with Art Berg.

While attending a March 2000 convention in San Diego, I had the pleasure of hearing Art Berg present his inspirational message "The Impossible Just Takes a Little Longer". After the presentation I purchased Art's book and had the opportunity to speak with him for just a few moments. I shared my goals of writing a book and becoming a professional speaker. Art Berg told me that we all have an important message to share and that we all have the ability to be "markers" for others to look to for guidance.

That short conversation, which I am sure Art would never remember, provided the inspiration to empower me to make my dream come true. I knew I had the ability and skills, and my family and friends all provide positive encouragement…but I had simply never made the commitment to make it happen. Art's simple and inspiring message made a difference…at that moment in time I made a decision to achieve results by the end of the year.

Within 10 months of my conversation with Art, I finished writing my book, "Results, There's No Such Word as Can't", found a publisher, and had the book printed. My professional speaking business Dale Berry Presents was established, my web site www.ResultsCoach.org was completed and I booked my first paid speaking job on January 29, 2001. During the next year, I met the requirements to become a member of the National Speakers Association by presenting over 20 presentations during a 12-month period.

It is an amazing phenomenon, friends and family can cheer us on with some effect, but complete strangers can show encouragement and interest with an effect that allows us to find a deep reservoir of energy and enthusiasm to reach new heights to achieve our goals. There were many times building and working towards my goals that I would think back at Art's presentation, read a few pages of his book or go to his web site (www.ArtBerg.com) for a little added inspiration to keep on track. Inspiration is a powerful tool and Art Berg not only demonstrated a remarkable ability to be inspiring, but he also gracefully confirmed that we all have the power to inspire others.

I had the pleasure of meeting Art and hear him speak for a second time at a company meeting on February 17. Art was as entertaining and inspirational as I had remembered, once again he filled the entire audience with the self-confidence and empowered us to make a significant paradigm shift and motivated us to unleash the magnificent power that lies within.

After the program I met with Art and presented him with a copy of my book and he let me wear his Super Bowl ring. This was a special moment that I will always remember…sadly, two days afterwards, Art Berg passed away in his sleep from what appears to be a possible reaction to medication.

Inspiration is a powerful and significant influence that we all seek and more importantly can provide to others. Art Berg demonstrated this in many ways by inspiring hundreds of thousands of people over his lifetime. Art's books, Some Miracles Take Time, and Finding Peace in Troubled Waters (available at www.ArtBerg.com) create a solid foundation of inspiration to achieve personal goals. Art Berg set the standard for being inspirational, but more importantly, he demonstrated that we all have the ability to be a "marker" and an inspiration to influence and touch the lives of those around us.
