Slow Down to Go Fast

Do you remember the last time you were faced with a new challenge or were trying to overcome a hardship? If you are like most people, much of the stress you experienced did not come from the notion of the task itself but rather from the details and deadlines associated with the tasks. You no doubt had to deal additionally with a host of other projects, people and "stuff" going on in your life. It is at times like this that you start to feel overwhelmed, overworked and you get the sense that you are starting to lose control.
One of the fundamental keys to achieving RESULTS is to learn how to "Slow down in order to go fast". To some, this may sound like a contradictory statement. If you are in a hurry, if deadlines are approaching and your are running out of time, common sense tells you it is time to speed up, not slow down. The challenge with this sort of "common sense" thinking is that when you pick up the pace, you increase the chance for mistakes plus you now add an additional level of stress and anxiety to the mix. The reason you feel stressed is because you have lost faith in your ability to accomplish the task and you are starting to shift your thoughts to all the reasons and obstacles that are in your way to achieving success or the impending deadline.
So how do you "Slow down in order to go fast"?
The first step is to acknowledge the fact that you are losing, or in some instances, may have already lost control of the job at hand. The two most common sources of stress in accomplishing any task are either you feel like you are running out of time or you are overwhelmed with the amount of work to accomplish. Recognizing the simple fact that you have stress and you are (or are getting) overwhelmed will equip you for creating a RESULTS focused solution to your situation.
Step two
Slow down and get organized. Whether you are overwhelmed with the volume of work or running out of time, to achieve RESULTS it is essential that you assess your situation and then create a common sense strategy to achieve your goal. In order to be able to make a solid strategy to ensure success, it is always a benefit to slow down and take a little extra time to make sure your plan is a good one and you have the tools and resources you need to accomplish your goal.
Now that you have slowed down you may come to the realization that it may just be impossible to complete your task by the deadline that has been set. That's OK, don't panic! You have two options if this is the case. Get help, ask for assistance or resources to assist you in keeping the deadline and achieving success. If there is no help to be found, then change the deadline to a more realistic timeframe. Remember that your ultimate goal is achieving RESULTS and the key is taking responsibility to ensure your strategy will allow you to achieve success.
You know what you need to accomplish, and it is typically fairly obvious what you need to DO to accomplish your goals. Next time the deadlines are closing in and you're stressed out and feeling overwhelmed make the extra effort to "Slow down in order to go fast". This method will serve you well and help secure your ability to achieve RESULTS.
